How To Read The Bible “Biblical Law”

What is the “law”

613 regulations, some are easy to understand.

  • Do not lie
  • Do not steal
  • Don’t kill people

Others not so much.

  • Don’t wear garments with two different kinds of cloth.
  • Don’t eat shellfish.

The word “law” can refer to different things.

  • The 600 laws in the books of Moses
  • The first five books of the Bible

Referring to the religious life and rituals of the old testament.

Three plus one kinds of laws

Civil

  • Justice
  • Property rights
  • Marriage Standards
  • Theft
  • Murder
  • Health regulations

Made sense for their culture and time in history.

Ritual instructions

The Levites were the descendants of Levi and did not receive a geographical portion of the promised land because their portion was service to God as priests was a foreshadowing of Jesus.

Moral principles

The 10 Commandments are still applicable in the new testament.

Set apart

Less common but brings understanding to many. Some laws are simply to set Israel apart from all other nations. Circumcision is the most obvious example. Rules against intermarriage was never racial but based on belief system. Same standard exists in the New Testament.

2 Cor 6:14

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? NLT

How do you know which ones to follow

Not that simple, Peter “Kill and eat”. Jesus simplifies it.

Lev 19:18

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

Mat 7:12 “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets

(Gal 5:14, Ro 13:8, Ro 13:10, Gal 6:2)
