Kanye West’s new faith-centric album has sparked an expanded interest in Christianity – and a public ministry is providing free tools to nonbelievers.
American Bible Society says it is free Bibles to Kanye’s fans who fill out a form on the organization’s website. The people got the idea from Google data that indicated a point in searches for evidence about Christianity the week the album was announced.
Kanye published his latest album, Jesus Is King, last month.
“Kanye West’s album has had an instant effect on the recent news cycle. ‘Jesus is King’ was on-demand internet searched last Month with over 1 million on Google alone,” John Plake, director of ministry intelligence at American Bible Society, said in a press release.
“Fortunately, something we see as a rising trend is that most Americans turn to Google as a de facto spiritual guide,” Plake added. “Our mission with this program is to give Americans – and, yes, Kanye West fans – the chance to find for answers to their most pertinent questions at the source.”
“Kanye” was the No. 1 trending topic on social media on the day he released his album, Friday, Oct. 26, while “Jesus is King” ranked No. 4, according to Google data. “What do Christians believe?” also saw a spike that week.
The American Bible Society, the press release said, “hopes to aid people with issues by giving free of charge access to the Bible.”
“This is what we love to do: share the Bible with those who are seeking spiritual answers or simply curious about its contents,” said Robert Briggs, interim president, and CEO at the American Bible Society.
Fans who want a free Bible can fill out the form here.
The American Bible Society is a nondenominational ministry that distributes Bibles and offers biblical supplies to people around the world. It was established in 1816.
